Description / Details
Eudendrium californicum Torrey, 1902 (Fig. 3A, B) Eudendrium californicum Torrey, 1902: 32, pl. 2 figs 13 – 14. Eudendrium californicum .— Fraser, 1937: 39, pl. 6 fig. 27. Type locality . USA: San Francisco Bay, California (Torrey 1902: 33). Material . IHAK37, colony section, without gonophores (BHAK 1137), RBCM 026-00030-011, GenBank accession PV366335 (COI). Description . Colony erect, hydrocaulus robust, ~ 0.4 mm in diameter, ascending in a loose spiral, branches short relative to main stem, up to 1.4 mm long, ~ 0.2 mm in diameter, given off at an angle of around 45° or less relative to stem, branching occurring on all planes following the direction of the spiral. Perisarc horn-coloured, moderately thick, stem and branches entirely annulated; annulations narrow, distinct, and close together, extending to base of hydranth. Hydranths large, with about 21 tentacles in one whorl, extending over trumpet-shaped hypostome. Gonophores not observed. Remarks . No other COI sequences of Eudendrium californicum were found in GenBank, and the newlyobtained sequence shows no significant match to its congeners. Reported distribution . Pacific coast of North America: entrance of San Francisco Bay; Tomales Bay, and Pacific Grove, California (Torrey 1902); Estevan point, near Maquinna point, off Nootka Island, Bajo reef, Nootka Sound, off Vancouver Island (Fraser 1937).
