Description / Details

Garveia nutans Wright, 1859 (Fig. 2I, J) Garveia nutans Wright, 1859: 109, pl. 8 fig. 5.β€” Fraser, 1937: 36, pl. 5 fig. 22.β€” Schuchert, 2007: 252. Type locality . United Kingdom: Inch Garvie, Firth of Forth, Shetland Islands (Wright 1859: 109). Material . DS-0542, four colonies with gonophores (β™‚) (BHAK10147), RBCM 026-00010 - 001.β€” DS-0482, one colony and several detached hydrocauli, without gonophores (BHAK10124), RBCM026-00007 - 002. Description . Colonies approximately 2 mm high, with prominent central main axis, arising from creeping, ramified stolon. Main stem polysiphonic, tubes almost equal in diameter, becoming monosiphonic distally; side branches given off at 45Β° or less, variable in length, mostly monosiphonic. Perisarc moderately thick, smooth or irregularly wrinkled, on some branches lightly annulated throughout, or corrugated at base, expanding and thinning distally towards hydranth base as a filmy pseudohydrotheca, not covering tentacles. Hydranths at end of branches; broad, urn-shaped, hypostome prominent, tall dome-shaped, with one whorl of around 13–14 tentacles. Gonophores fixed sporosacs, ovoid, narrowing to truncated apical point, ~ 0.6 mm long, diameter 0.5 mm at widest point, arising from main stem, on ~ 0.1mm high pedicels originating from within cup-like perisarc sheath, sheath tapering proximally. Pedicels can reach or exceed length of gonophores. Male sporosac with spadix projecting into a spacious cavity. Female sporosacs not observed. Remarks . Nutting (1901) provided the first north American record of Garveia nutans from Berg Inlet, Glacier Bay, Alaska, but he noted the fragmentary nature of the material. Schuchert (2007) considered this record to be doubtful. Morphologically, the trophosomes and gonosome of the material collected during this study correspond to Fraser’s material from Alaska (BCPM 976-100-001). Reported distribution . Pacific coast of North America: Alaska (Nutting 1901); Brinckmann-Voss (1983).β€” Atlantic Ocean: Faroe to the Strait of Gibraltar (Schuchert 2012).
