Garveia annulata Nutting, 1901 (Fig. 2F–H) Garveia annulata Nutting, 1901: 166, pl. 15 figs 1 – 2. Type locality . USA: Alaska (Nutting 1901: 167). Material . IHAK50, colony with gonophores (♂), Ectopleura marina epizoic (BHAK2478), RBCM 026-00035 - 006.— Mainguy Rock, Hakai Passage, One colony with gonophores (♂) (BHAK10795), RBCM 026-00045 - 002.— Mainguy Rock, Hakai Passage, colony on algae, with gonophores (BHAK11474), RBCM 026-00045 - 005.— Mainguy Rock, Hakai Passage, colony on algae, with gonophores (BHAK11476), RBCM 026-00045 - 006. Description . Hydrorhiza creeping, stolons anastomosing, forming holdfast at base of colony. Colonies usually erect, about 9 cm high, with prominent central main axis, larger branches somewhat regular, arising from main stem, larger branches approximately on the same plane and sub-opposite, smaller branches arise from all planes off the main stem or larger branches, main stem and branches polysiphonic. Mostly-monosiphonic, long pedicels arise from main branches and directly from main stem, supporting hydranths at terminal ends. Some colonies sparingly branch, consisting mostly of unbranched, monosiphonic pedicels. Perisarc moderately thick, wrinkled, becoming corrugated or irregularly, spirally annulated on pedicels, thinning out and expanding distally to form filmy pseudohydrothecae around and sometimes overlapping, but not covering, base of tentacles. Hydranths broad, urn-shaped, hypostome high domed-shaped, one whorl of about 16 tentacles. In life, entire colony is bright orange. Gonophores arising from main branches, or directly from stolon, on pedicels originating from proximallytapering, cup-like perisarc sheaths; sporosacs globular to oval. Gonophores fixed sporosacs. Remarks . Nutting (1901) reported colonies with sparingly branched stems and gonophores borne on the hydrorhiza and regarded the sparse branching and placement of the gonothecae, along with the distinct annulation of the stem, to distinguish Garveia annulata from its British congeners. The present author observed elongate colonies with long main axes in addition to sparingly branched, mainly pedicellate colonies in the samples (e.g., RBCM 026- 00045-005), where the colony consists mainly of unbranched stems with some sparingly branched stems. In contrast to elongate colonies, where gonothecae are borne on main branches, on sparingly branched, mostly-pedicellate colonies, gonothecae arise only from the hydrorhiza. Reported distribution . Pacific coast of North America: Alaska (Nutting 1901); Haida Gwaii, Vancouver Island, and San Juan to California (Fraser 1911, 1914b, 1935b, 1937); Santa Catalina Island and San Francisco (Torrey 1902).
